How Does it Work?
The Pillar Implants are made up of tightly woven polyester materials that have been used as part of medical implants for years. Under the surface of the palatal lining, they induce a peripheral reaction that will eventually create some fibrous tissue. When there are three implants side by side, 2 millimetres apart, this fibrous tissue will form a sling or a bridge that will act to stiffen the soft palate, preventing from collapsing as much when the palate muscles relax during sleep.
This fibrous tissue does not interfere with the actions of the palate muscles, nor with the action of other throat muscles. This means there is no effect on speaking or swallowing in patients undergoing Pillar Implant procedures.
